Why do conservatives bash Byrd knowing that they elected the last KKK member to office?

David Duke ran for president as a Democrat and failed. When David Duke became a Republican and ran for office in Louisiana, he won. You'd think this happened in the 60s or 70s, but no, it happened in '88.
