How to start a mini garden?

I want to make a mini garden on my balcony at my apartment. What should I get for my vegetables to flourish? I was thinking of planting some tomatoes, banana peppers, some herbs, & maybe a few other things. Anything helps since this is my first time doing any gardening. Thanks.
