How can Obama learn from the Cuban Missile Crisis?

For school, I had to watch the movie Thirteen Days (with Kevin Costner) that shows the processes Kennedy and his administration went through during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Part of the assignment that follows asks us to write about how Obama and his administration could learn from Kennedy and his. Unfortunately, I'm the least politically involved person I know so I don't know where Kennedy's tactics would be applicable. So if you could even just mention things that I could research and make the connection myself it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!
